How To Do ASHTANGA YOGA TRIYAKA BHUJANGASANA (TWISTING COBRA POSE)

“Triyaka” means triangular or diagonal,”bhujanga”means snake and “asana”means pose.

Steps to practice TriyakaBhujangasana:

Lie down on your stomach.Keep the legs hip width apart. Your toes have to be touching the floor with your heels raised up to the ceiling. Keep your palmsplaced on the floor, between your rib cage and your shoulders facing downwards and your elbows pointing to the back. Fingers are together,facing forward. Now, press your palms on the floor and lift your torso up from the waist. Keep your arms straight. Your shoulders are pulled backand your neck is stretched up. Remember to keep your pelvis pressed firmly on the floor,do not bend your elbows. As you exhale twist your body and yourhead to the right and gazetowards your left heel over your right shoulder. Feel the stretch in the abdomen and the waist. Inhale as you come back to the centre. Exhale and twist towards the left.Remember to retain your breath while twistingand stay in the final posture for as long as you can .Repeat this 5 to 7 times.

Caution:

TriyakaBhujangasna should be avoided by people suffering from peptic ulcers,hernia,intestine tuberculosis or those withan enlarged thyroid gland.People with back injury should refrain from doing this asana. Pregnant women should also avoid.

Tiryaka Bhujangasana strengthens the shoulder,spine and back.

The abdominal twist massages the internal organs.

The opening of the chest helps to improve the lung capacity, hence breathing improves.

The arms and thighs get toned.

This asana soothes sciatica.
