Movements and Exercises to Avoid for Someone Suffering from a Lumbar/Sacral Disc Bulge
In this video, I explain the different movements and exercises that an individual should avoid if they are suffering from a lumbar/sacral disc bulge.
The beginning of the video explains how “spinal flexion” is problematic to someone suffering from a lumbar/sacral disc bulge. Spinal Flexion involves any forward tilting or bending of the spine that causes the vertebral disc to open posterior-ly. Someone suffering from a disc bulge injury may experience severe pain when engaging in spinal flexion and therefore should be avoided.
Also, straight leg hip flexion or any type of deep hip flexion can cause the sciatic nerve to stretch out. For someone suffering from a lumbar/sacral disc bulge, if the sciatic nerve becomes stretched, it can become further compressed by the bulging disc.
A common test that involves the sciatic nerve being stretched is known as the “straight leg raise”. This is where health practitioners are attempting to re-create the pain to determine if an individual is suffering from sciatica.
