If you’ve just purchased a yoga mat or are considering buying one, you’re probably wondering how involved cleaning it will be. Thankfully, yoga mats are easy to clean. Yoga mats don’t need intensive care, and need cleaning only once a month. Cleaning ones made of vinyl or rubber is considerably easier than cleaning those made out of jute or cork. Vinyl and rubber mats only require soap and water to clean, while jute and cork mats require cleansers that are less harsh than either of those due to the porosity of those materials.

A little preventative care goes a long way with yoga mats. Before doing any yoga on your mat, you want to make sure the floor that you put it on is clear of any dirt and debris, since they can become impacted into the mat while you are exercising on it. In addition, you will want to take a shower before doing yoga on your mat to prevent any dirt from your body from getting on the mat. Wearing loose-fitting clothing to minimize sweating while doing yoga is also a good idea, since sweat will impact the stickiness of the mat and make it require more constant cleaning. If the temperature of your workout area allows, wearing loose-fitting clothing that also absorbs your sweat, such as sweatpants, is even better since it will prevent sweat from contacting the mat.

If these pre-cleaning rituals are followed, you will only need to give your mat a thorough cleaning once every month or so to eliminate the built-up dirt, sweat, and grime. For vinyl and rubber mats, simply clean it with water and a little bit of soap. Next visualize the heart itself: Think of it as simply a vital muscle pumping blood through the body; think of its four chambers, the valves which make the blood flow always in the same direction, of the relationship to it of the veins and arteries; of its rhythm when you are at peace and its quickened pace when excitement, physical exertion or deep emotion stimulate it; then consider the meaning of a warm heart, a generous heart, a loving heart.

Gradually you will find yourself engrossed in meditation that encompasses much broader vistas and touches upon more lofty considerations than anything which concerns one individual alone. You will feel a sense of peace taking possession of your entire being, and you will be the better for it.

Other subjects which might take you in similar manner from concrete to spiritual contemplation are: light, beginning with a lighted candle and continuing to sunlight and enlightenment and the flow of the spirit; a book, which becomes the symbol of learning; a flower; a cloud. Later on you might choose some historical personage whom you especially admire and with whom you feel a deep sense of identity. Consider his life history, the events which led up to his greatness and what it was that made him particularly admirable; then notice how, for the moment, you are trying to view the world through the prism of his personality.

This will give you an insight and an awareness of Self keener than you ordinarily experience, for in a sense it will be a shared experience. At the same time you will be able to look at yourself as if from another viewpoint. The added insight will help you disentangle your Self from identity with your mind.

Such insight is one of the main objects of meditation, since most of us have never learned to make a distinction between Self and the mind, nor do we stop to realize that they are not one and the same, Self being constant in its inherent nature, while the mind, by its very nature, is subject to endless modification.

Envision success and it will come. This is not a thoughtful wish – you still have to take positive action toward your goals. Better than that, you must have real goals. Do you desire to discover a successful life? If so, you must educate yourself and move forward.

Why do some people wish you to be unsuccessful?

This is “Crabs in a Bucket” theory in practice. If only one crab was in an open bucket, it would have a much improved chance of success. When a number of crabs are together, they hold each other down inside the bucket.

Simply put, take the time to observe when a few people around you try to hold everyone else back from progress. Sometimes, it’s not even intentional, but a default mechanism, which directs one toward negative thinking. Many people do not believe they can succeed in life because someone told them so.

Why we believe that we do not deserve success and what can Yoga do to change it?

If you believe something strong enough, it will be your personal reality. Some people will tell you: “Good things don’t happen to our kind of people.” What is “our kind of people?” Do not let anyone tell you that you deserve less because of your pedigree. Past performance of your family tree is not an accurate indicator of your success.

What each form of Yoga can do is program your mind in a positive direction. You can change the present, by believing that you deserve to succeed, and by taking steps toward success.

In the morning try if possible to set aside a regular period for your yoga breathing, relaxation and concentration routines, preferably combined with a few asanis(poses). If you must leave these routines for later in the day, at least make sure of a few minutes given over to deep breathing before you dress.

Do the breathing after you have washed, brushed your teeth and cleaned your tongue and also emptied your bladder. Try to establish the habit of evacuating your bowels at this time, too, especially if you plan on the full yoga routine; but do not force yourself or allow the bowel movement to become a matter of concern.

After your breathing and relaxation exercises, make sure you eat breakfast without gulping. Never skip this first meal, but keep it light. It is a good general rule not to overeat: always get up from the table slightly unsatisfied, as if you could stand another mouthful.

If morning is not a good time for your yoga exercises, be sure to allocate a regular period for them either at the end of your working day or before going to bed. But do not delay until you stagger with fatigue. If you do, it will be too late for the exercises to do you the maximum good. Do not wait until you are overtired.

Make it a practice sometime during your waking hours to take out five to fifteen minutes for complete relaxation, with your mind a blank and your body completely limp.

Remember to practice deep breathing at odd moments, whether while taking a walk or sitting relaxed in a chair.

Jealousy, anger, envy, hate are not only to be avoided — they are emotions unworthy of one whose philosophy attempts to encompass true understanding of others. As your own self-searching bears fruit, you will find these unwelcome emotions more and more foreign to you. For, knowing that the shortcomings of others are no worse than your own, you will look upon them with tolerance. And as you yourself tend more and more to be well-disposed toward those with whom you come in contact, they in turn will respond with greater good will and positivity toward you.

Tolerance, charity, compassion are to be cultivated and soon will become a happy habit. This in turn will bring its own dividends. You will find yourself more and more at peace with the world, no longer permitting the imperfections of others to act as irritants.

The next step is to exhale and bend forward as you exhale from your hips, keeping your back straight until your forehead touches the floor, hold for three to ten steady breaths.

The breathing meditation, this works great for relieving anxiety and creating a peaceful moment. Sit in a chair or on the floor, place your hands on your knees, close your eyes and breathe through your nose.
